Hi School Council,
I would encourage the statement NOT to enter into specific issues of implementation, as it appears very weighted to the issues surrounding only a JK-03(families split apart) and ignores the issues with transferring the older grades(small class sizes). Please remember the statement speaks on behalf of the school, and rightly points out that "there does not seem to be consensus." This statement in many ways argues for the full implementation of Jk-06 by pointing out potential problems of phasing in the grades. School council should simply point out there are many points of view. I am also unsure of why Council would make a recommendation for the boundaries. Pointing out a problem with splitting a street is fine, but suggesting what catchment area that street should belong to is questionable. I hope this can be revised, as it fails to take a neutral position.

mbrown - as the school council, we have no opinion on how the split should be. I am sorry if you felt it was. However, our position is to reiterate that funds must be available beyond the grade implementation decision. If the board intends to only fund some of the grade levels, there has been no indication how the rest of the grade levels will be funded. Would that be Connaught's responsibility - and then it would be directing funds out of the English program? These are important questions we need trustees to consider before they debate on January 21. They can not be left until the transition team takes over (because the funds will be allocated before then). The delegation was our only opportunity to speak directly to trustees before they debate funding.
All of the kids in the new EFI program deserve access to the same level of materials available to them at Devonshire.
As for the Fairmont split, that is true information based on much feedback from streets currently split between two schools. Future families who move onto Fairmont would be very surprised to learn that depending which side you live on, your children would either go to Connaught or Devonshire. When boundaries change, we tried to think of what would be best in the long-term. If you are affected by the Fairmont split (the board has identified 3 current Devonshire families who would be), you can talk to the school of your choice and apply for a transfer.
